There are a small number of legally mandated exceptions. Your therapist is required to break confidentiality in the following situations:
Imminent risk of harm — if you disclose a credible intention to harm yourself or another person, your therapist is required to take steps to ensure safety.
Child or elder abuse — therapists are mandated reporters in Texas. If there is reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, it must be reported.
Court order — in rare circumstances, a court may legally compel the release of records.
Your therapist will review these exceptions with you during your first session and answer any questions you have. Transparency about these limits is part of informed consent.
